The Unconditional Love of a Goldendoodle

Every family seeking the perfect puppy wants one that fits their family's lifestyle and is an excellent companion dog. If you have young kids and are looking for an affectionate, playful dog breed, look no further than a Goldendoodle puppy.

The Goldendoodle's loving, affectionate temperament is perfect for a family, and there are many reasons to get a Goldendoodle as a family pet, especially for a family with kids.

The History of the Breed

As the name implies, the F1 generation of Goldendoodles is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, two dog breeds known for their affection, intelligence, and good behavior. Originally, the Goldendoodle breed was developed to serve as guide dogs

The genesis of the Goldendoodle came, in part, from the success of the Labradoodle, which was considered to be smart, sweet, and kind. Goldendoodle temperament was designed to mimic that of the Labradoodle.

As time passed, the benefits of owning a Goldendoodle expanded: Goldendoodle puppies were smart, affectionate, and hypoallergenic. It became apparent that Goldendoodles were extremely friendly dogs, and they routinely rank among the best dogs a family can own.

Furthermore, certain "designer" Goldendoodle puppies have begun to emerge. This includes the mini Goldendoodle, which is between 15-35 pounds and perfect for those looking for a smaller family companion.

Goldendoodle's Affection

So, why choose a Goldendoodle? Adopting a Goldendoodle or Goldendoodle puppy gives you a family dog with one of the sweetest natures you can find in any dog breed.

Loving Nature

Let's be honest: Goldendoodle love is not difficult to obtain — all you have to do is be near it! Indeed, Goldendoodles are commonly regarded as among the most deeply affectionate mixed breeds. Goldendoodle's characteristics are snuggly, warm, friendly, and highly sociable. This makes living with a Goldendoodle ideal for individuals looking for dogs with a deeply loving nature.

As you would imagine, with a breed like this, the friendly nature of a Goldendoodle makes them great pets for families. If you are interested in a guard dog or a breed that will intimidate others, look elsewhere: The Goldendoodle is extremely sweet and incapable of providing any sort of security to a family.

Goldendoodle and Children

The loving nature of the Goldendoodle easily extends to children, which is why they are among our favorite kid-friendly poodle mixes. Thanks to their breeding, these dogs tend to be extremely gentle and patient with kids of all ages, even with toddlers. They respond well to socialization and tend to have calmer play styles, although they can be particularly energetic during their puppy years.

Pets, and especially dogs, can really help the growth and well-being of your kid, too. Pet ownership teaches them important life skills, and also support the emotional growth and social development of kids.

Like any dog of at least a moderate size (Goldendoodles tend to run between 45-100 pounds), you must be careful, as this breed's energy may cause accidental injuries. Of course, this also means you must train your kids to ensure they play appropriately and respect a dog's natural boundaries.

Goldendoodle and Other Pets

Generally speaking, Goldendoodles get along extremely well with other pets. Indeed, this dog breed is typically regarded as highly friendly with animals and humans. They thrive on social attention and will likely do well in a house where there is constant activity, including from other pets.

Socializing a Goldendoodle at a young age with other pets can be extremely important. However, the Goldendoodle personality tends to be relatively calm and easy-going, and adopting a goldendoodle at any age will usually work out, provided that you give structured socialization with any other pets.

Therapeutic Love of a Goldendoodle

The sweet nature of a Goldendoodle means that they are great for more than just family pets: In many cases, they can serve specific physical or emotional needs.

Goldendoodle as a Therapy or Service Dog

The emotional support provided by a Goldendoodle is top-notch. As noted above, Goldendoodle's were originally designed to be a guide dog. This means that Goldendoodle's behavior is ideal for providing therapy or assistance for individuals who require service animals.

In fact, our list of top service dog breeds includes both of the Goldendoodle's ancestors: The Golden Retriever and the Poodle.

From a physical perspective, Goldendoodles can provide the assistance necessary to serve as a therapy or service dog. These dogs are large - potentially reaching a weight of up to 100 pounds. They are also very even-keeled, which means they are likely to be gentle with individuals requiring special care and attention.

This ability to serve as an emotional support or therapy dog comes from the Goldendoodle's gentle nature and high levels of intelligence. Goldendoodles are naturally very social animals, meaning they will almost always be more than happy to snuggle, show affection, or play. Furthermore, Goldendoodles have a highly intuitive nature that makes them happy to help their human companions in various situations. This disposition, when combined with training, makes Goldendoodles more than capable of engaging in many common tasks for therapy dogs, including:

  • Finding items

  • Guiding owners

  • Alerting handlers to certain medical conditions, like low blood sugar, panic attacks, or seizures

  • Helping visually impaired individuals move and find their way around their environments

Mental Health Benefits

Goldendoodles make excellent emotional support animals for all of the reasons noted above. They are easily trainable, highly sociable, and intuitive about making their owners happy. Indeed, these dogs are sometimes referred to as people-pleasers.

That being said, someone doesn't have to suffer from a mental illness to be able to see mental health benefits from Goldendoodle's. Goldendoodles, like many other friendly dogs, can reduce stress levels, remove loneliness, and ultimately provide holistic mental health improvements.

How to Encourage Their Affection & Love

Trainability is key for any dog, particularly those you want to raise as family-friendly pets. In that regard, a few key behaviors can ensure you encourage Goldendoodles' love, affection, and attention.

Early Socialization

Early socialization is critical for any breed to become capable of interacting with both humans and animals. This is particularly true for breeds like Goldendoodle, who are already pre-disposed to be friendly and loving.

What does this mean in practice? As long as your Goldendoodle is physically capable of interaction, you should encourage it in a safe, structured way. Don't be afraid of introducing new experiences to your pet; introduce them to strangers, loud noises, and other animals. You must supervise these interactions, but you must encourage your Goldendoodle to engage as early as possible.

Positive Reinforcement Training

Positive Reinforcement Training is a type of training that uses rewards to encourage certain behaviors. Some dogs - including Goldendoodle's - respond very positively to rewards. This reward can come from praise, treats, or pets. A Goldendoodle's nature tends to seek out these types of rewards, and engaging in this type of training typically yields positive results from these puppies.

Affectionate Treatment

Most puppies respond extremely well to affection treatment, meaning they love snuggles, friendly pets, and more. Puppies, like children, will often model behavior from their human owners. To that end, treating your Goldendoodle in a friendly, affectionate way is key. If you are affectionate with your puppy, they are highly likely to be affectionate with you.

Fortunately, you're in luck: This probably won't be too hard for you. If you want a Goldendoodle, you are probably seeking a dog with a natural temperament inclined towards affection. All you have to do is reciprocate that affection, and you'll be set.

Raising a Health, Happy Goldendoodle

Of course, raising a happy and healthy Goldendoodle isn't just about giving them snuggles and kisses. Like any other breed, Goldendoodles have certain exercise, food, and activity requirements. Fortunately, these needs are far less demanding than many other breeds of their size.

Balanced Diet

As always, you should speak with your veterinarian for specific information on what may be appropriate for your Goldendoodle. Fortunately, there are no major requirements for wet and dry food.

The one particular note of caution is Goldendoodle's do sometimes have sensitive stomachs. To that end, keep their diet as stable as possible, and talk with your vet before you consider giving them any human food or treats.

Regular Exercise

A critical component of Goldendoodle care is ensuring that they get regular exercise. Remember, getting a dog is a true commitment for you and your family. To that end, you have to ensure that you walk them regularly. Regular outdoor activities - like running outside or playing fetch - can also help your Goldendoodles burn off excess energy.

Exercise estimates tend to vary, but most experts agree that Goldendoodles need the most exercise when they are still puppies, usually around 9-12 months. Two sessions of 45 minutes each are ideal.

Quality Time and Activities

Like all other dogs, mental stimulation is key to giving your Goldendoodle the home they deserve.

Fortunately, you can easily fold in this quality time with outdoor walks, fetch, and other games. You can easily play chase as dogs that run around provided you have a wide open space and a fenced-in yard. Fortunately, Goldendoodles also plays very well with other kids and pets, meaning you can let these animals play together.
