The Akbash is a large, white breed of dog that originated in Turkey. These dogs are similar in looks to Great Pyreneeses and white Labrador Retrievers. However, this muscular breed is distinct in origin. Akbashes were originally bred by shepherds to guard livestock and have protective instincts. Given their breeding history, this breed tends to be gentle with friends and family but reserved with strangers. These dogs not only have high levels of endurance, but are also very intelligent and trainable. For this reason, they are commonly used as security dogs or in search and rescue missions. As a family companion, this breed requires plenty of exercise to stay mentally and physically healthy.

Alaska is home to some of the great natural wonders of the world, and thanks to its dog-friendly culture, you can experience many of them together with your dog! Hike the trails at the Far North Bicentennial Park in Anchorage, or the Tongass National Forest in Juneau. Your dog will also love spending an afternoon at Connor’s Bog Dog Park in Anchorage, or at the Lake Lucille Dog Park in Wasilla. If you haven’t brought your own dog with you on an Alaskan holiday, look into special hiking (or sledding) excursions with cold-weather Huskies!
