Trained as ship dogs for Portuguese sailors many centuries ago, the Portuguese Water Dog is a cold-tolerant, intelligent and active breed. Originally responsible for retrieving items from the sea, herding fish into nets and carrying messages between boats, the Water Dog has boundless strength and energy. These dogs love spending time outdoors with family, whether on a camping trip, a mountain hike or at the lake. Adult Portuguese Water Dogs weigh between 35 and 60 pounds.
